Government Tanning Institute established in 1934, is one of oldest leather institute in India. It is situated on the Jalandhar- Nakodar road and is about 3 K.m from the General Bus Stand. It is a mono technical institute, presently functioning under the administrative control of Dept. of Technical Education and Industrial Training Punjab and is governed by the Ministry of Technical Education. The institute imparts diploma level training in the leather Technology and Leather Technology(Footwear).
With the assistance of the World Bank, the Government has met the expenditure of constructions of additional building and also contributed funds for the purchase of machinery and equipment under the modernization scheme. The recurring expenditure is born by the state Government. The institute at the time of its inception was initially providing training in the processing of raw leather. Gradually it was converted into a diploma level institute for the technological up gradation of training industry.
To meet with the growing demands of mechanized export oriented leather and footwear industry, the curriculum of Diploma in Leather Technology and Diploma in Leather Technology(Footwear) has been revised. The duration of both the courses has also been extended to 3 year (six semesters) and the intake being enhanced from 10 to 25 seats and 15 to 30 seats respectively. The revised curriculum has been introduced with effect from the batch admitted in 1997 and 1998 respectively through J.E.T. conducted by the state board of Technical Educationand Industrial Trainng Punjab.

The institute is also constructing state of the art Laboratories to keep with current demands. The emphasis has been to provide a coherent science and technology base in emerging areas. Keeping this in view, this institute signed M.O.U.s with leading manufacturing and exporting units to seek guidance and expertise.
